The Basics
What Are RAMS Documents?
RAMS stands for Risk Assessment and Method Statement. Together, these two documents form the cornerstone of safe working practice on any construction or maintenance project. A Risk Assessment identifies the hazards involved in a task and the control measures needed to reduce risk to an acceptable level. A Method Statement describes, step by step, how the work will be carried out safely.
Under the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015 (CDM 2015), contractors are legally required to plan, manage, monitor, and coordinate health and safety. RAMS are a fundamental part of meeting that duty — and most principal contractors and clients will not allow work to begin on site without them.

Legal Duties
CDM 2015 — Know Your Duties
The Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015 place specific legal duties on clients, designers, principal designers, principal contractors, and contractors. If your project involves more than one contractor, or lasts longer than 30 working days with more than 20 workers simultaneously, CDM 2015 applies in full.
